01 / Premise
A budget is not a table.
It is a set of relationships.
Goen is a microbudgeting app built around a circular, directly manipulable view of available money. Every expense is rounded to the nearest five cents. Each colored segment is both a category and a share of the whole; spending visibly depletes it, while changing an edge reallocates the total.
The name carries its own small piece of change. In Japanese, 五円—go-en, five yen—sounds like ご縁, a fortunate connection associated with good luck. The app translates that wordplay into a practice: small amounts gathering into new possibilities.

03 / Working logic
Every gesture makes five-cent sense.
The U.S. Mint ended production of the circulating penny in November 2025. Existing pennies remain legal tender, but Goen begins with the next practical cash increment: five cents. Expenses round to the nearest nickel, and those small increments remain visible as they gather into change. U.S. Mint ↗
- 01Allocate
Divide a fixed total into named budgets. The ring makes every increase visibly come from somewhere else.
- 02Spend
Assign an expense to one budget. Every entry resolves to the nearest five cents as the segment visibly depletes.
- 03Gather change
Five-cent increments below the next whole dollar accumulate around the outer edge instead of disappearing into rounding.
- 04Return
Once the accumulator reaches a dollar, send it back into a budget and continue the cycle.

The prototype moves between a tactile Apple interface, a compact server, and an intentionally plain store. The browser study above borrows only the interface logic; it is a self-contained editorial demonstration, not a hosted version of the product.
